Become A Good Writer

  1. Perhaps the most important element of any worthwhile piece of writing is making sure you have an interesting story, article, plot or theme you want to convey to your reader. Without this, even the greatest, most technically gifted authors will fail.
  2. Getting the right audience, purpose and tone for your writing is a crucial element to any successful piece. You should always be aware of exactly who it is you are writing for and be able to tailor your work to suit the target grouping. Similarly, always try and make sure you have a reason for writing in the first place. Is it to persuade, inform or review for example? Once you have an understanding of the first two elements, you can then confidently pitch your writing at its correct level.
  3. Capturing your audience with a great introduction is a sure-fire way to keep them reading. Will you begin with a quotation, a line or two of vocabulary or perhaps a flashback to, an as yet, unexplained incident. Great writing captivates from the first sentence.
  4. It is important that your writing has a flow to it. While sentences and paragraphs don’t have to be uniform throughout the piece, it is a hallmark of a good writer that their words seem to be well thought out and part of a recognisable and consistent style.
  5. Good grammar is a simple and basic but necessary requisite of the talented author. It can also demonstrate, as in the use of more sophisticated elements like correctly using semi colons and parentheses, a consummate level of skill.
  6. Much of the acknowledged great canons of writing are master-classes in descriptive techniques. Adjectives are the staple of the descriptive writer and they can often be utilised in doubles or even triple form to add effect.
  7. Similes are a poetic technique also often employed by a good writer to add colour and provide a striking, clear and bold image into the readers’ mind. They are most often based around the comparatives ‘like’ or ‘as’ and the best writers can create the most unique and imaginative concepts by using this technique. However one must be careful not to fall into the trap of cliché or idiom!
  8. Like a simile a metaphor can be used to create powerful and long-lasting imagery in the perception of the reader. As opposed to a simile which compares two things to one another, a good metaphor simply and directly links two items to each other. The level of sophistication of the linkage and the quality of the image created, however, is the hallmark of the good writer!
  9. Personification is the writing skill that manages to attach human characteristics to an inanimate object. Like adjectives, similes and metaphors, personification is another element in the toolkit of the good writer. Effectively employed it can bring an intensely atmospheric and vivid feel to your writing.

Once you are up and running and are satisfied with what have committed to paper so far, a good writer has to make absolutely sure that that don’t retreat back into the comfort zone and reiterate or rehash the good work they have already done. A wise man once said “Said something once, why say it again?”



  1. Time-shifts, flashbacks, disconnected or out of order narrative are also highly refined writing techniques. The confident and bold writer will not allow his audience to become safe and settled in their reading in case the work begins to fall into an all too predictable rut.
  2. Similarly, varying the rhythm and pace of your writing is indicative of great control and a deft touch. Each sentence doesn’t have to be the same length. Each paragraph doesn’t have to have an equal number of sentences. Each page doesn’t demand an equal number of paragraphs. Be imaginative in the format of your writing.
  3. The plot development or arc of a piece of writing can be an important feature. The level of control showed by the writer can keep the reader entranced as the story or feature moves along heading towards a revelation or the major incident.
  4. The end of a piece of a piece of quality writing can do many things. It might leave the reader captivated or emotional. It might shock or surprise. The reader may be puzzled or bewildered. It should definitely leave them wanting to read more of the writer’s work!
  5. A good piece of writing should engage with the reader’s mind on an intellectual level in that should not be over-simplistic, sloppy, dull or rehashed.
  6. In addition to challenging the reader on a cerebral level, good writing can also appeal directly to the emotions. Not in a mawkish or over-sentimentalised way but in a manner that connects with those raw and intimate feelings that often serve to dictate the actions of any given current reader.
  7. It may sound obvious but words are the basic tools of the trade of a good writer. The more telling and powerful an image is allows the reader to become fully immersed in a piece. Good, thoughtful and well crafted vocabulary enriches a piece of writing perhaps more than any other feature.
  8. Be aware that your ideas are exactly that. Your own! It is perfectly fine to be influenced by the great writers. A good writer must be careful not to let that admiration spill over into a copying of style or, even worse, plagiarism.
  9. In a similar vein, it is important that a writer has self-belief and a confidence in their own ability. Don’t be apologetic. Even the greatest and most successful writers had to start somewhere and the good writer accepts this and steps up to take a shot.
  10. As a counter-balance, however, don’t assume everything you have written is worthy of a Pulitzer. The very best writers will be the most self-critical. Analysis of what you have written and a willingness to learn from your mistakes will propel the average writer to a higher status. Therefore, always look to see how your last piece could be improved.
