Ellis (1995) breaks down the components of communication between the sender, the message and the receiver, with possible feedback, to make it a two-way communication process. The impact of ineffective communication is profound on a human mind. Ineffective communication introduces high proportion of misunderstandings and conflicts amongst people. A good level of emotional quotient is required for effective interpersonal communication. The feedback needs to be analysed and interpreted in a proper perspective. The response to the feedback in a particular scenario should be clear so that a rapid rapport is build between the speakers. The internal and external barriers like fatigue, poor listening skills, attitude toward the sender of the information, lack of interest in the message, fear, mistrust, past experiences, negative attitude, problems at home, lack of common experiences, and emotions affect the message from getting through. When communicating, we need to monitor the actions of the receiver, check the body language; check to make sure the message the receiver received is the one we intended.
Communication skills
To communicate effectively we need to listen actively, interpret information that is imparted by the speaker verbally and non-verbally. To quote James P.T. Fatt in Communication World, June-July 1999 v16 i6 p37 (4) It's not what you say; it's how you say it. The non verbal cues such as body language, intonation, tone, volume also imparts information. We can draw inferences based on such un-stated information. Stein-Parbury (1993) distinguishes between active listening and hearing. . Hearing happens with the functional ear and does not reach to the soul, so the response would be a very artificial.
Jourard (1994) says that humanistic psychology is defined in part by an effort of self disclosure that creates conscious awareness by helping ourselves and others come to an understanding of what is going on inside and possibly the forces that cause that. Self disclosure motivates the development of relationship. Empathy is another important skill in communication which involves understanding and sympathizing. We need both our brain and soul involved. The best model of empathy is our Lord himself. If Jesus Christ had been merely sympathetic to our plight, he would have watched our struggles from afar, shaking his head and feeling bad. If he had been merely analytical, he would have told us exactly what to do, stripping us of our freedom and solving all our problems for us. Instead, the Son of God chose to become one of us (see John 1:14; Luke 1:32; Philippians 2:7; Colossians 1:15, 1 Timothy 2:5)
