CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.0Introduction
Knowsley has been given top marks by the Audit Commission following its latest assessment and is now classified as an ‘Excellent’ Council. The comprehensive performance assessment (CPA) score saw Knowsley leap from ‘Good’ to ‘Excellent’.The Audit Commission gave particular mention to the effective running of the council and the progress being made in education (www.knowsley.gov.uk/media )
This dissertation is about the recruitment and retention of shortage subject teachers within the Knowsley area of Manchester and takes into consideration research undertaken within ten of the eleven schools within the local education authority. The author will draw upon national issues, make local comparisons and determine recommendations for the future. As an authority, Knowsley is keen to both attract and retain the best teachers for their area and believes that this dissertation will help to address any issues, shortage subject teachers may have.
