Introduction
There might be general agreement towards what constitutes best practice in management approaches theoretically yet due to the complexities of evolving new business environments practical managing styles vary greatly from one another. Such differences in styles must be accounted for bearing in mind different organisational structures as well as resources. Schneider and Barsoux (2003) suggest that differences in beliefs and values tend to have significant influences on management practices with cultural influences as such a vital feature of management. Therefore an essential understanding of successful managers can be seen as the ability to handle people effectively in terms of applying a leadership style used to affect an organisation’s behaviour directly and indirectly. From a psychological understanding leadership can be defined as the process of influencing others in a manner that enhances their contributions to the realisation of group goals, (Haslam, 2001). In turn due to the positive impact on other people’s behaviour this concept is widely used in developing and or theorising what are effective business management practises. However changing external environments have provided new challenges and thus shaped significantly current models of leadership.
Firstly changing views of the business organisation has had strong influences on the role of leadership in management as well as what are the predominant characteristics of current leadership models. For example with the development of new technologies such as those which comprise corporate information systems are argued in some ways as generating negative effects on the relationship between the leader teams and middle management teams, (Dopson & Stewart, 1993). In addition the phenomenon of increased internationalisation has created new demands for leadership in managing business in organisational units which are in different national contexts such as joint ventures. As a result then it is useful to understand the new roles of leadership in managing organisational change processes associated with these trends. This is because those companies who are successful will be those whose strategy is based on dealing with change and continuous improvement in terms of quality and product or service delivery. The strategic position of leadership in the management of business activities is one of considerable interest in research and practise with numerous suggestions as to what are the core elements. Haslam (2001) for example argues that the role of trust as a way of implementing and realising effective strategic leadership is essential in corporate management.
