Disaster recovery planning as a component of business continuity represents a phrase that at the outset seems to identify impending doom. In actuality, the foregoing represents the prevention of impending doom through the recognition that such an occurrence, IT disaster, is a real threat that has many possibilities in the manner it can happen within an organization. It is the function of the IT department to understand and analyse the factors that might potentially impact the company and system and thus plan contingency measures that minimize, or better still eliminate the threat. And while it is impossible for any plan to foresee all of the possible variables that might impact upon it, the strength of disaster planning does not lie in being able to counter all threats, but in being able to protect data, access it and retrieve it after such an event. The physical logistics in terms of personnel, office damage or other site or location specific aspects is not a direct consideration for disaster recovery with respect to the IT department.
Disaster Recovery Planning is a function of the Information Technology Department. In the event of such an occurrence, disaster, the IT department will need to undertake specific actions to restore the environment, meaning access to data (tekcentral.com, 2005). Business Continuity Planning is a function that entails the entire organization. As such, the ramifications of a disaster in terms of its meaning becomes broader in scope as this aspect involves people, location(s), and equipment (tekcentral.com, 2005). Such an event, disaster, under this meaning entails getting physical site aspects back into functioning order as opposed to the data component which is held at another location. For the purpose of clarity with respect to the IT department, it should be mentioned that the foregoing explanation assumes that the data storage methodology entails backup facilities in differing locales and utilizing differing methodologies for protection.
The preceding explanation has been brought forward to clarify the terminology, as well as to provide the foundational explanation of how said terms apply in the instance of ‘disaster recovery planning for retaining business continuity’. The examination of this function entails measures that protect vital data, as well as data being added to the company’s database, and the means to be able to have such data available for use after a disaster. The creation, development and maintenance of such a plan is a complex undertaking that entails a series of well considered steps (disasterrecoveryworld, 2005).
