ABSTRACT
This dissertation is about the recruitment and retention of specialist subject teachers within secondary schools in the Knowsley area of Manchester. It was proposed that there were underlying factors that impacted on such, namely hygiene and cultural factors. To look into these issues an action learning group was set up comprising (I do not know who of or how many involved but this will need to be stated here) in order to take a broad view of the possible causes from as many areas of the local authority as possible. This group was also used as a sounding board for the author’s ideas, which were then initially tested on head teachers from 10 of the 11 schools within Knowsley. Having refined the pertinent questions to ask, and determined the subject areas of the shortage teachers, the author then progressed to survey 300 of these teachers. Disappointingly only 106 of these completed the survey nonetheless at around 37% it was felt that the results were valid, particularly as privately sponsored surveys had obtained similar or lesser responses when covering such topics.
The author found that in fact, there were no real problems in recruiting and retaining teachers of shortage subject areas within the Local Authority Area of Knowsley, however there was a problem throughout the area in recruiting and retaining Heads of Departments within these subjects, along with senior staff in general. Cultural and hygiene factors played a significant part in a teacher’s decision to join, stay in and progress within the profession amongst the group surveyed.
The author wishes to state that she is aware of the limitations of the findings as the survey was restricted to secondary schools within the area of Knowsley and only covered teachers of perceived shortage subject areas. Conclusions reached cannot be assumed the same for such teachers in other authorities, as local recruitment and retention strategies will, of course differ an have possibly different impacts. In addition this survey does not cover teachers of non shortage subjects. so cannot be deemed to be representative all secondary teachers within Knowsley or the UK as a whole.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Customer this should be personally written, but something along these lines is usual
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped with this dissertation. First and foremost to my family, my husband/ partner who and my children who missed out on activities during this period in order to enable me to complete my MA and progress with my career.Equally important was the role played by the Action Learning Group and the 10 Head teachers of the Knowsley secondary schools who gave me a great deal of insight into the subject of recruitment and retention amongst shortage subject teachers within the area. This enabled me to focus on the appropriate target teachers and then reaffirm the approach I then took with such teachers.
