An investigation into the effects of a student lifestyle on health
Abstract
In this piece we have attempted to answer the question of how a student lifestyle affects a student’s health. To accomplish this we have examined the problem of defining a student’s lifestyle. We have considered ways in which it can be investigated and quantified. We have reviewed the literature relevant to the ways in which we suspect a student’s health may be affected by their lifestyle, with particular reference to the amount of exercise that they take and their diet. We have investigated and examined the current recommendations for the minimum exercise requirement to maintain cardiovascular fitness. We intend to quantify what proportion of the student population manage to achieve those particular recommendations. In the process of investigating this factor, we intend to obtain sufficient information to calculate each respondent’s BMI as an indicator as to whether they need to gain or loose weight in order to fit into one of the criteria for fitness.
We also examine the other parameters and indicators of health as revealed by the Literature Review. We have interpreted Health in its widest context and taken a holistic approach rather than just concentrate on purely physical health
We have investigated how a student’s mental health (and other parameters of overall health) has been affected by the transition to student status. We have considered ways in which we can determine whether a person’s lifestyle has significantly changed in relation to those factors that influence their health so that a distinction can be made between a student and Mr Average who has a non-student life style. In effect, each student will act as their own matched control.
We consider the issues regarding the status of the student’s sexual activity as it relates to health issues and comment on the appropriateness of including such topics in a survey designed to look at all aspects of a student’s lifestyle in relation to their health.
We also have looked at, and discussed other issues that have arisen from the Literature Review, which have been judged inappropriate to include, even though they may have some bearing on the student’s overall health. These areas relate to the predictive indicators which may be apparent, which may give pointers to a student’s long term health
We have decided that the best way of obtaining this information is by way of an anonymous questionnaire. We hope to obtain enough valid responses to allow a statistically valid assessment of the issues being investigated. The questionnaire is original and has been designed especially for the purpose.
We describe how the questionnaires were distributed and collected and how the results were collated (client to add)
We outline the analysis and collection protocols that have been established to attempt to maximise the use and availability of information gleaned from the survey.
